Disney Cruise Pirate Night Packing List (What Families Actually Need)

Pirate Night is one of the most talked-about nights on a Disney cruise. And once you’re there, you totally get why.
But if you’re spending time stressing over the perfect pirate outfit, you’re already overthinking it. Our family wore matching navy pirate shirts, the kids had plastic pirate hooks and glow sticks, and that was honestly enough. Disney even handed out bandanas that night, so the extras we packed stayed in the bag.
What matters most is having the right small things on hand so your family can enjoy the deck party and fireworks without scrambling at 9pm. Here’s exactly what we’d pack again and what we’d skip.
Quick Pirate Night packing checklist
Outfits and accessories
- Pirate shirt or themed outfit for each family member
- Comfortable shoes (you’ll be on your feet late)
- Pirate accessories: eye patches, hooks, bandanas
- Glow sticks or glow necklaces for the deck party
For kids
- Pajamas to layer under or change into before the deck party
- Small bag for accessories and snacks
- Any needed meds, epi-pens, or allergy items (always)
Family extras
- Portable charger
- Lightweight crossbody bag
- Wipes and backup snacks

What is Disney Cruise Pirate Night?
Pirate Night is a themed event on most Disney cruise sailings. Here’s the quick rundown of what happens:
Themed dinner
Your dining room goes full pirate with themed food, decor, and crew in costume. Fun even if you’re not in full costume yourself.
Character appearances
Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, and Smee usually make an appearance, and other characters show up in pirate gear. Lines move fast if you plan ahead. We made it our mission to find Stitch in his pirate outfit and barely made it before he wrapped up for the night.
Deck party and fireworks
The main event, usually starting around 10pm. There’s a pirate performance, music, dancing, and it ends with fireworks at sea. Actual fireworks on the ocean. Worth every minute.
One thing to know: it starts late. If you have younger kids, plan around that timing. More on how we handled it in the kids section below.

What adults should pack
You do not need a full costume. Most adults wear a simple themed tee with a few accessories and call it done. That’s exactly what we did.
Easy outfit ideas for moms
- Matching family pirate shirts — our whole group did this and the photos are everything
- Striped tee or all-black outfit with a bandana or scarf
- A flowy dress in black, red, or navy with a sash
Accessories worth packing
- Bandana or pirate scarf
- Pirate-themed earrings or a sash to pull together a simple look
- Pirate accessories set for adults
Shoes: skip the heels. The deck gets breezy and you’ll be standing for a while. Sneakers or broken-in sandals only.
One thing I’d add for moms: bring a lightweight crossbody bag. You’ll have your phone, a charger, wipes, and whatever the kids hand you all night. Hands-free is the only way to survive this one.

What to pack for kids
Kids are going to love this night regardless of how elaborate the costume is. A few fun accessories on top of a simple outfit is more than enough.
Accessories they’ll actually use
- Plastic pirate hooks — Emery and Kylo carried these the entire night
- Kids pirate costume accessories set with eye patches, hooks, and bandanas in one pack
- Pirate eye patch and hat set for kids who want to go all in
Glow sticks are non-negotiable
Pack a bulk set of LED glow stick bracelets. The kids wore them all night, they made the fireworks more fun, and as an unexpected bonus, glowing kids are much easier to spot in a crowd on a dark deck.
The pajama trick
This is the thing I wish someone had told me before our trip.
The deck party starts around 10pm. Kids are running on fumes by then but won’t admit it. What we did: had Emery and Kylo shower and change into pajamas before the party. They wore their PJs with pirate accessories on top, and when the fireworks were done we walked straight back to the cabin. They were asleep in minutes.
It sounds a little silly. It was genuinely one of the best calls we made all night.
Pirate Night extras that make a difference
These are the things that don’t make most packing lists but quietly save the night.
- Portable charger — photos, videos, and checking the Navigator app will drain your phone fast. Charge it before dinner and keep it in your bag.
- Crossbody bag — skip the tote. Small and hands-free wins on a late night with kids.
- Wipes — you already know why.
- Backup snacks — especially if your kids have food allergies. Don’t count on finding something on deck that works. We kept snack containers stocked for Kylo all cruise long.
- Autograph book and a Sharpie — characters in pirate gear make for great signatures.
What we actually used vs. what we didn’t need
Worth it:
- Glow sticks — kids lived in them all night
- Plastic pirate hooks — pried out of their hands at bedtime
- Matching family shirts — the photos alone made it worth it
- Portable charger — essential
- Pajama swap — life-changing for bedtime after a late night
Skip it:
- Extra bandanas — Disney hands them out and kids will want those anyway
- Elaborate adult accessories — the shirt was enough. A scarf or earrings would have been more than sufficient.
- Overthinking the costume — nobody is judging. Everyone is having too much fun.
Pirate Night FAQs
Not full costumes, but they do hand out bandanas. You may also get pirate extras through Fish Extender or Pixie Dust gifts, so don’t go overboard shopping before you board.
Most do, at least a little. A themed tee and a bandana is totally normal. Full costumes exist too. There’s no wrong answer.
Yes. Fireworks at sea is one of those things you won’t forget. If you have younger kids, the pajama trick makes it doable without a rough bedtime.
Yes, but selection varies and prices are higher than Amazon. Grab your glow sticks and pirate accessories before you sail.
Around 10pm on most sailings, but check the Navigator app once you’re on board for your specific itinerary.
Final tips before Pirate Night
- Check the Navigator app that morning for exact timing
- Do the pajama swap before heading up to the deck
- Charge your phone or portable charger before dinner
- Grab your glow sticks from the cabin before heading up
- Give yourself permission to skip anything that feels like too much
Pirate Night will be a highlight of your trip. Keep it simple, let Disney do the heavy lifting, and enjoy it.
